Regard the pearly nautilus in all its splendid sheen,
Been with us since Late Triassic times, and still here to be seen;
No need of change or to evolve: why tamper with perfection,
Unlike the fickle ammonites which change without reflection.

A hundred thousand years of time’s advance into the future
Sufficed for them to change their ribbing, whorls and suture.

This frantic evolution speed was really quite phenomenal
And troubles palaeontologists with problems taxonomical.

Whilst to the ammonites themselves it confers remarkable distinction
It failed entirely to protect them from the K/T mass extinction.
