To promote a wider interest in the science of geology through organised lectures, field excursions and social activities.
To provide a link between the amateur, the student, the teacher and the professional geologist.
To foster interest in geological sites within the area with a view to their study and wise conservation.
To establish and maintain good relations with organisations that have common interests.

The South Wales Coalfield

Doctor Peter Brabham,
Cardiff University

Pete is interested in the application of applied geophysical techniques in civil engineering, environmental analysis, mineral resources and archaeology. His background is in the application of high resolution shallow seismic surveying but he has a wide interest in other surveying techniques such as electrical resistivity, gravity, magnetics and radar. He lectures on exploration geophysics at both BSc and MSc level as well as contributing to courses in remote sensing, natural resources and information technology.

He is a native of the Rhondda Valley and graduated in BSc Geophysics from University College Cardiff in 1982. He subsequently obtained a PhD from Durham University in 1986 on the application of high resolution shallow seismics to opencast coal exploration.

Presently he is using geophysical mapping techniques to investigate the internal structure of active and derelict landfill sites in South Wales. In 2006 he has just begun a new project studying the internal structure of active landslides in the South Wales Valleys.
